Bridge Tunnel Fiber Build & SplicingIn 2009, Cable Associates constructed a 13 mile segment of a seventy mile fiber build from Virginia Beach to Maryland. Once it was designed and constructed Cable Associates spliced and tested all 70 miles, crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, the largest bridge-tunnel complex in the world. We worked closely with VDOT in order to learn and understand necessary procedures for safely crossing the bridge and tunnel. In addition to VDOT, we worked with the Eastern Virginia Broadband Authority (ESVBA) while undertaking the 13 miles of duct bank boring, placing several hand holes and placing the necessary fiber within the duct by way of air delivery system, commonly known as fiber or cable blowing as well as the splicing and testing procedures. The thirteen mile fiber construction took approximately four months, and the entire seventy was spliced in two months. In addition to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, Cable Associates has also completed other bridge-tunnel crossings including the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel and the Monitor Merrimac Memorial Bridge Tunnel. We have also crossed the Midtown Tunnel the Downtown Tunnel both in Norfolk, Virginia. All crossings were done using various procedures covering all access points of the bridge and tunnel, including suspension over the sides of the bridge, pulling through existing ducts in the roadways within the bridge/tunnel, and placing through the ceiling of the tunnels.
